There is a lot of confusion about what Zambra is — and is not. Zambra is not a fusion of flamenco and belly dance.
Originally, Zambra Mora was the name given to the dance, the music, and the celebrations my ancestors held in Al-Andalus — the Arabic name for Spain — dating back to the Middle Ages.
Zambra survived centuries of prohibition to become a cultural sensation in the 1940s — before falling into oblivion and becoming an art almost in danger of extinction.
As a result of my over 25 years of research, you can now enjoy this short film — a panoramic view of Zambra's fascinating history and some of its best kept secrets.
Keeper of a Tradition Born in Al-Andalus
¡Hola! I am Puela Lunaris, award-winning researcher, choreographer, and torchbearer of Zambra, my own cultural heritage.
Zambra has been a guiding light for me since I was a child, and I have devoted myself since 1994 to researching and rescuing its different styles, especially the flamenco forms I grew up loving and dancing.
With a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Culture and Dance Education from the State University of New York (SUNY) and a Master’s in Digital Media from New York University (NYU), I’m dedicated to safeguarding flamenco traditions in danger of extinction, with a focus on Zambra and the ancient feminine flamenco dance style.
As a multimedia producer, dance educator, and founder of the Flamenco Roots Program, I combine my passion for digital storytelling and dance to share the magic of my culture with you!
My desire is to help you discover Zambra's fascinating history, embody the dance, and experience the richness of a tradition that deserves to be remembered and celebrated.
